Subalternity and Difference
(G. Pandey & B. Knauft)
Program Home | Upcoming Events | Past Events
In academic scholarship, the subordinate
or “subaltern” has been prominently theorized
in order to understand stigmatizing differences within and
across world areas. “Subalternity and Difference”
hence provides a powerful scholarly framework for analyzing
the global diversity of stigmatizing difference. This emphasis
resonates with existing Emory faculty strength in the Law
School, School of Public Health, and the Candler School of
Theology, and expertise across social science and humanities
departments in Emory College. The strong implications of this
scholarship will inform many if not all other dimensions of
Emory’s Race and Difference Initiative. In the process,
it will connect the strength of our existing faculty and programs.
Accomplishments in academic year 2007-2008
- The Subalternity and Difference program, directed by Gyanendra Pandey and Bruce Knauft, had Dr. Sanal Mohan take up residence as a Graduate School, RDI and ICIS postdoc fellow in January. He has participated actively in graduate seminars on subaltern and postcolonial studies, and also presented a paper at the Colonial and Postcolonial Studies seminar on April 23, 2008.
- Profs. Peter Geschiere and Willem van Schendel of the University of Amsterdam made seminar presentations on central Africa and Bangladesh respectively on March 26 and April 2, 2008.
- Gyanendra Pandey is editing a special issue of the journal, Interventions, which will carry a selection of papers from our ‘Subaltern Citizens and their Histories’ workshop, held in December 2007. The special issue is due to be published in November 2008.
(A larger volume, which will include more of the contributions presented at the workshop, is being prepared for publication by Routledge, London: this is expected to appear in 2009).
- They received approval and funding, are now making preparations for an Emory faculty trip to India in August 2009, during which a team of Emory faculty members will continue discussions on ‘Subaltern Citizens and their Histories’ at educational and research institutions in four different cities in India.
