This
RDI grant will be coordinated by the Office of Multicultural
Programs, who will draw upon its current student program,
called Issues Troupe, to develop and provide theatre workshops
during 2007-09. These two-hour workshops are designed
for students to share and gain understanding about race and
other forms of stigmatizing difference.
Ken Hornbeck, the director of Issues Troupe,
will co-facilitate these workshops with OMPS. Students will
sign up for these theater workshops, named "Crossing
Boundaries," which will be offered in either one or two
parts, depending upon the venue and student availability.
Through a series of theater improvisation exercises and games
led by Issues Troupe actors, the student participants will
address and generate skits regarding race, language, class
difference, and 'isms' or chasms that are present at Emory.
Issues Troupe actors will also prepare targeted
scenes designed specifically to address issues of race and
difference which, when presented for workshop participants,
will serve as a springboard for discussion. These workshops
will be evaluated by the student participants to assess cross-cultural
learning and new understanding about race, difference, gender,
and sexuality. The goal is to target diverse groups of students
in the residence halls so that the workshop participation
will enhance new friendships, important dialogue, and build
a closer sense of community.
Accomplishments in academic year 2007-2008
- The Crossing Boundaries / Multicultural Programs, directed by Donna Wong, organized seven workshops in residence halls during the spring and summer, Six were held at Emory campus, and the final one was a showcase of the CB Workshop to share with eight other Georgia colleges that conduct diversity work.
